A new issue facing the Korean community
is the dilemma of Second Generation
Korean Americans, who are having difficulties
rooting themselves in this society.
They
struggle with social inequality in the
workplace and mainstream society due
to their ethnicity, yet feel more comfortable
with the American culture versus the
Korean culture.
Second
Generation Korean Americans also face
multiple barriers with their parents
and grandparents as they find it difficult
to communicate due to language barriers,
and have a hard time understanding “the
ways” of their elders due to lack of
cultural understanding.
The
Korean Service Center believes it is
important to reach out to all generations
of the Korean community to work together
and to bridge the divide between generations.
It is an exciting opportunity to pass
on cultural resources to future generations,
and they in turn will share valuable
knowledge of this society with us.
