This
program provides a variety of social
services to new Korean immigrants, older
Korean Americans, and those who are
not familiar with the social welfare
system. It is the oldest program at
the Korean Service Center and has four
different areas of service.
The
first area of service in this program
helps low income people apply for SSI,
MSA, medical assistance, food support,
housing assistance, etc.
The
second service provided is the Citizens’
College, which is designed to provide
ESL/Civics education courses to help
non-English speaking immigrants adjust
to living independently. The students
not only learn English for basic everyday
communication, but they also learn about
U.S. history, U.S. culture, and civic
responsibility. This program is funded
by the Department of Education.
The
third service managed through this program
is the famous Community Peace Garden.
Fifty-four Korean American elders participate
in this project, along with other members
of the community. The Peace Garden is
provides an opportunity for participants
to grow their own vegetables and for
the Korean elders, it is a vital component
to improving and maintaining their physical
and mental health.
The
fourth service offered is the Senior
Dining Program. The dining program provides
members of the assisted living program
two Korean meals a day, seven days a
week. The dining program is open to
the community with a suggested donation
of three dollars.
In
addition to providing direct social
services, the Korean Service Center
encourages immigrants to participate
in community activities and cross-cultural
exchanges.
