End
Slavery Now
End
Slavery Now is as a youth led, Anti-Human
Trafficking organization sponsored by
the Korean Service Center. The youth
involved serve as leaders and experts
on the issue of Human Trafficking
History
In
Spring of 2008 Yaejoon Kwon, an advocate
at the Korean Service Center, presented
a workshop about Human Trafficking to
a group of young Korean Americans. From
the audience, four high school students
got together and decided to take a stand
against this human rights violation.
As the five brainstormed, they decided
to spread the word about Human Trafficking
amongst their peers by forming End Slavery
Now.
Events
In
the Summer of 2008, End Slavery Now
hosted a two-day Anti-Human Trafficking
conference to join the fight against
Human Trafficking. Not only did we spread
the word on the horrors of this atrocity,
but the group also raised money to donate
trafficking kits to victims of Human
Trafficking.
On
November 8th, 2008 ESN hosted an Anti-Human
Trafficking Benefit Concert. We donated
our money to Veronica’s House, a project
dedicated to safely housing victims
of human trafficking in Peru:
Recently, a group of modern day abolitionists
met a girl named Veronica in need of
a haven from traffickers. Unable to
house her, the team had to release Veronica
back to the streets. One week later,
her tiny body was found in a hotel room,
strangled to death by one of the men
she’d been forced to have sex with.
Veronica’s death serves as a reminder
of the real danger children face on
the streets of Lima. Not for Sale is
building an emergency shelter and safe
house in Lima, to be named “Veronica’s
House” in her honor.
The
ESN Benefit Concert featured various
musical, theatrical and musical performances.
Our performances included Tou Ger Xiong,
a nationally renown Hmong comedian and
activist, Shinparam a Korean drumming
group, and Ryan Jordan, a modern day
abolitionist all the way from Duluth,
MN.
Thanks
to our hard work, ESN raised $1000 dollars
to donate to Veronica’s House. Our donation
was hailed as an “answer to our prayers”
as the house was short of building funds.
